Coming Out of the Fog

Trying to come back to normal - as it were!  Whether it was the episode of the air conditioner or water in my ears from water aerobics - either way I ended up with a massive sinus infection and ear infection in both ears last week.  I was down and out for a few days feeling like a total dish rag.  In the midst of all of that, we had storms around here.  The hot afternooon, huge rain - lightning - thunderstorm kinda thingys.  On Thursday afternoon during one of those, hubby was a little late making it home.  When he arrived, he opened up the back of the car and produced a by-product of the storm!

100_1233_7As it turns out - she was standing in the middle of the large highway, shivering and terrified.  No collar, no home, starving.  Amid my protests - what will the 2 German Shepherds do - will they accept her, reject her - what will the Welsh Corgi (aka princess shark attack) do - will she put her in her place? - we brought her inside and were astounded.  Our two German Shepherds adored her, the Corgi ignored her - all around acceptance!  She had a good first night, then took her first trip to our vet after I visited my doctor for my ailments!  The vet agreed with us - she's been on the streets since birth, she's a Catahoula Leopard Mix (the state dog of Louisiana), she's about 9 months old, one brown eye and one ice blue eye, a black merle (dappled) coat, and an all around absolute sweetheart.  Our only uphill battle at this point is the fact that she has a mid to high infection status of heartworms.  So - we have to keep her mostly indoors and fairly quiet until we can start the heartworm treatments in November.  As I found out - they don't like to do these treatments in the heat because of the added stress to the heart.  Around here - it only begins to become somewhat cool (in the upper 60's to lower 70's) in November - so that's when we can start the treatments.  She'll be crate confined for a couple of months - only getting out to go potty, then right back in.  Our vet said she basically has to stay with her heart at rest.  Poor baby.  But - we fell in love with her instantly, and she is really a little fighter.  After all - she made it to this point, and she won over the entire family! Our vet assured us that we should have a complete recovery after 3-4 months of treatments and loving care.  I think we're up to that for our little Abigail!!

While they are all napping, I'm off to start a new Take '5'.  Got to get this one done, quilted and out of the door to Accucut for their new catalogue ASAP!!! No rest for the weary!

Hot and Bothered

Saturday night, we awoke feeling hot and sticky (it is, after all, Louisiana here folks!)  Daytime temps in the 90's with 85+% humidity, and night time temps near 80.  Our poor central air gets a workout.  We woke up because that brand spanking new air conditioning unit didn't seem to be working.  Got up to check it out - and when hubby turned off the fan, the whole house plunged into darkness.  Wonderful.  No electricity.  Got the flashlights and eventually discovered that we actually had power in the front half of the house, but not the back - and no 220 at all.  ARRGH!  So - at 2:30 in the morning, I put on a pot of good old Louisiana coffee, and we waited until we could call for help.  The power company came out - and after a couple hours, we had this in our backyard.

100_1208 Believe it or not, this little dolly with a couple of little boxes on it had enough voltage to power our entire house.  No noise, no anything, just sweet, sweet power and AIR CONDITIONING!!!!   What you can't see here, is the HUGE chain that is hooked to this thing, then bolted to our incoming power pole.  Seems as though this unassuming little fella is worth about $8,000, and the power company wants to make sure it doesn't just wander off somewhere.  It's a brand new technology, according to Mr. Power Man - and without it - we would have been without power for a few days.  The thought of that makes me start sweating buckshots already!

Fast forward to today - the power folks came again - found the source of our problem.  As it turned out - the cable folks nicked our main power cable when they were digging in our yard about a month ago, and didn't bother to let the power folks know.  Eventually - the power cable failed, and Saturday night ensued.

After a couple of hours, the cable was fixed, full power was restored, and this cute little thing disappeared onto the back of the power company truck.  All in all - it wasn't as bad as it could hae been.  Ahhhhh - life in "the tropics"!!!

A Work In Progress

I was quilting a customer's quilt this week, and try as I might - I just couldn't get good pics of the top side.  So - last resort - I flipped it over to the back and got some fairly decent shots of the quilting on the back.  Take a look!

Yippeeeeeeeeee

Yep - the child is coming home.  For a week!  I can't wait!!!!   She's been living in Houston for the past year going to school, and Mom here has had a real hard time with this.  We miss her terribly - but cell phones, web cams and the like have really helped out over the past year. Week long visits every few months help out a whole lot too!  We're real proud of her - graduated with honors from LSU in forensic anthropology, now in nursing school with the ultimate goal of becoming a forensic nurse death investigator / coroner.  Whew - what a mouthful - but she it!   Here she is, with our adorable grandpuppies Dixie Doodle and Gracie Lou!

Aren't they just the cutest things?  And full of mischief, too!

That's all for now - off to work on a market model, then to my quilt shop to work on an antique quilt that I'm quilting!

Sneak Peeks!

WOW - I was absolutely bowled over today when I picked up 2 new quilt tops from my quiltmaker!  She's an absolute perfectionist - and is always there to help me out and make my quilt tops when I get overloaded with orders / new designs / etc, etc.  She did a fantastic job on these 2 new tops - just take a look and see little snippets of the quilts.  One is a new Take 5, and the other is a jelly roll quilt that I designed for my new book on jelly roll quilts with The House of White Birches.  I'll post a full pic of the Take 5 as soon as I finish quilting it and getting the pics done - but you'll have to wait to see full pics of the jelly roll one when the book is released later this year :(.  Anyway - here's a look - what do you think?
